Table of contents
I’ve created this guide to help you choose the best supplements for your particular needs. Not all supplements are created equal; the manufacturing process, the specific form of the nutrient (i.e. natural or synthetic, chelates, ascorbates, etc.), the delivery system (i.e. liposomal, transdermal, etc.), and the way nutrients are combined and proportioned are all critical variables in determining the quality and suitability of a supplement.
As a working clinician, part of my job is to continue researching the best supplements for each particular condition or therapeutic application, so I can deliver the best possible care to my patients. In this guide, I’ve listed many of the same products that I use in my practice with patients. I have also created bundles of these products for each health condition I cover in the book and the bonus chapters on the website. I’ve made both the individual products and the bundles available in my online store. That way you will have access to same high quality products I prescribe to my patients, and you can rest assured that you’re taking the proper form of each nutrient with the optimal delivery system.
Remember to check with your physician or health care provider before beginning a supplementation protocol.
Two categories of supplementation
I separate supplementation into two categories: maintenance, and therapeutic. Maintenance supplementation involves supplementing with selected micronutrients that are difficult to obtain even in the context of a nutrient-dense Paleo diet. Supplements in this category are generally taken in small doses, indefinitely. Therapeutic supplementation involves using supplements for a specific purpose for a specific period of time. For example, you might take melatonin on an overseas trip that involves moving across several time zones, or you might be take vitamin C if you feel a cold coming on.
Addressing common challenges and maximizing chances for success
After working with hundreds of patients, and hearing from thousands of blog readers and podcast listeners, I realized that a large majority of people have three problem areas:
- Digestive distress
- Low energy and sugar cravings
- Poor detox capacity (often manifests as acne, hormone imbalance, depression or anxiety, or cognitive problems)
When I encounter a patient like this in my private practice, there are certain steps I take to smooth their transition to Paleo and increase their chances of success. One of those steps is providing supplemental nutrients that many people tend to be deficient in. Another is prescribing supplements for therapeutic purposes, depending on the particular condition the patient has.
While the best results will always be obtained by working with a skilled practitioner, I recognize that this isn’t always possible. I’ve provided some general guidance below for those that are not able to work with a practitioner.

DIABETES AND OTHER BLOOD SUGAR DISORDERS
General Recommendations:
- Chromium: 100–300 mcg/d in chromium chelate form. (Note that some research suggests that chromium picolinate, a popular form of chromium, may cause DNA damage at high doses.)
- Alpha-lipoic acid: 200–400 mg/d.
- Magnesium: 300–500 mg/d in glycinate form.
- EGCG (green tea leaf extract): 200–300 mg/d.
- Gymnema sylvestre: 200–400 mg/d.
- Banaba leaf extract: 40–60 mg/d.
- Prebiotics: a good formula would include arabinogalactan, beta-glucan, inulin, and oligofructose.
- Probiotics: I prefer soil-based organisms because of their superior tolerability and colonization of the G.I. tract.
- Nutrients to support adrenal function: poor blood sugar control is often linked to low cortisol, high cortisol, or disruption in the normal diurnal rhythm of cortisol production. Supporting the adrenal system can help regulate blood sugar.
Chris’s Preferred Products & Dosages:
- Metabolic Synergy by Designs for Health. Helps support healthy glucose and insulin levels. Dosage is six capsules per day, two with each meal, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner.

Suggested supplement bundles:
I’ve created discounted bundles of the supplements above for hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism. Learn more about the hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism bundles and purchase.
AUTOIMMUNE DISEASE
General Recommendations:
- Vitamin D: I recommend people with autoimmune disease keep their serum 25D levels at the higher end of my recommended range of 25–50 ng/mL, i.e. somewhere between 40–50 ng/mL. See Chapter Sixteen in the book and the bonus chapter on supplementation for more information on how to do this.
- Glutathione: 450 mg/d in liposomal form.
- Curcumin: 600 mg once or twice daily, preferably in water-soluble, nano-particle form.
- EPA and DHA: though I prefer that you meet your EPA and DHA needs by eating cold-water, fatty fish, I realize that’s not always possible. If you’re taking cod liver oil, as I suggested in Chapter Eighteen, that does contain a moderate amount of both EPA and DHA. Some may benefit from additional EPA and DHA, which can be obtained by taking one gram per day of a high-quality fish oil.
- Probiotics: soil-based organisms may be particularly helpful for those with autoimmune disease. They were ubiquitous in our environment until very recently, and modern research inicates they have a regulatory effect on our immune system.
- Prebiotics: studies suggest that 75–80 percent of our immune system is in our gut. Prebiotics selectively stimulate the growth of beneficial gut bacteria, which support immune health.
Chris’s Preferred Products & Dosages:
- Liposomal Glutathione from Seeking Health. A liposomal form of glutathione (GSH), which is highly absorbable and effective. Take one teaspoon per day on an empty stomach.
- Liposomal Vitamin C from Seeking Health. A liposomal form of vitamin C that is more bioavailable than standard vitamin C preparations. Dosage: 1 tsp per day on an empty stomach.
- Longvida Optimized Curcumin from VRP. A highly bioavailable form of curcumin that is better absorbed than standard curcumin preparations. Take 1 twice a day on an empty stomach.
- Prescript Assist from Magnetic Clay. Soil-based organisms combined with a fulvic-acid-based prebiotic. Dosage is 1 capsule a day for the first 7 days, followed by 2 capsules a day for 30–90 days (until desired results are obtained), and then 1 capsule a day thereafter.
Suggested supplement bundle:
I’ve created a discounted bundle of the supplements above that I recommend for autoimmune disease, which you can learn more about and purchase here.
ADRENAL FATIGUE SYNDROME
General Recommendations:
- Pantethine: 450 mg twice daily with food.
- Vitamin C: 1–2 tsps once or twice daily, in liposomal form, depending on severity of adrenal fatigue.
- Adaptogenic herbs: these include Ashwagandha, Siberian ginseng (eleutherococcus), rhodiola, holy basil leaf, schisandra, and wild oats seed.
- Nutrients to regulate blood sugar: there is a close relationship between the adrenals and blood sugar, and most patients with adrenal fatigue also have poor blood sugar regulation. Chromium, alpha lipoic acid, gymnema sylvestre, and other nutrients mentioned above in the section on blood sugar disorders can be helpful in supporting proper adrenal function.
- Adrenal glandulars and hormones: as mentioned in the bonus chapter on adrenal fatigue syndrome, adrenal glandulars and hormones are best used under the supervision of a health care practitioner.
Chris’s Preferred Products & Dosages:
- Pantethine from Jarrow Formulas. A high-potency form of pantothenic acid. Take 1 capsule twice daily with food.
- Liposomal C from Seeking Health. A liposomal form of vitamin C that is more bioavailable than standard vitamin C preparations. Dosage: 1 tsp per day on an empty stomach.
- Stress Manager from Herb Pharm. A potent formula of adaptogenic botanicals that supports healthy adrenal function and regulates the stress response. Dosage is up to 40 drops in 2 oz. of water or juice, three or four times per day. Best taken between meals.
- Metabolic Synergy by Designs for Health. Helps support healthy glucose and insulin levels. Dosage is six capsules per day, two with each meal, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner.
- GlucoSupreme by Designs for Health. Supports healthy blood sugar with the use of cinnamon, corosolic acid from banaba, isoflavones from kudzu, and ginsenosides from ginseng. Dosage is two capsules two times daily with meals, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner.
Suggested supplement bundle:
I’ve created a discounted bundle of the supplements above that I recommend for adrenal fatigue syndrome, which you can learn more about and purchase here.
ACNE, ECZEMA, PSORIASIS AND OTHER SKIN CONDITIONS
General Recommendations:
- Vitamins A, D, and K2: the easiest way to obtain these is by taking cod liver oil and butter oil. I recommend Extra Virgin Cod Liver Oil (EVCLO). Dosage is 1 tsp a day.
- Quercetin and bromelain: 1,600–2,400 mg/ of quercetin and 200–400 mg/d of bromelain, taken in divided doses with meals.
- Vitamin C: 2–3 tsps per day in liposomal form.
- Nutrients to support proper methylation: as I described in the bonus chapter on skin conditions, histamine intolerance is associated with poor methylation. To improve methylation, take 400–1,200 mg/d of active folate (5-MTHF), 400–1,200 mg/d of active B12 (methylcobalamin), 600–1,800 mg/d of trimethylglycine (aka betaine anhydrous), and 5–20 mg of active B6 (pyridoxal 5’–phosphate, aka P5P).
- Probiotics: not all probiotics are suitable for skin conditions, especially if histamine intolerance is present. I have found that soil-based organisms and specific histamine-degrading species like Bifidobacterium infantis, Bifidobacterium longum, and Lactobacillus plantarum are most beneficial. Dosage varies depending on the product.
- Prebiotics: Taking prebiotics is the most effective way of increasing the levels of bifidobacteria already in your gut. Since bifidobacteria is histamine-degrading overall, prebiotics can be an effective treatment for histamine intolerance.
- Diamine oxidase: This is only required for those with severe histamine intolerance, or for those with mild to moderate histamine intolerance that wish to enjoy histamine-containing foods on occasion; dosage is 4,000–10,000 HDU before eating the histamine-containing food.
Chris’s Preferred Products & Dosages:
- Extra Virgin Cod Liver Oil (EVCLO). The highest quality cod liver oil currently on the market. Dosage is 1 teaspoon a day.
- Quercetin and Bromelain from NOW. Dosage is 1 capsule three times daily with food.
- Liposomal C from Seeking Health. A liposomal form of vitamin C that is more bioavailable than standard vitamin C preparations. Dosage: 1 tsp per day on an empty stomach.
- Methyl-Guard from Thorne. Contains the active forms of B12, folate, and B6, as well as trimethylglycine, to support proper methylation and reduce histamine intolerance. Dosage is 1 capsule one to three times daily. Start with the lower dose and build up slowly over time to the full dose.
- Prebiogen from ChrisKresser.com. A synergistic blend of arabinogalactan, beta-glucan, inulin, and oligofructose Take 1 capsule a day. (If you experience gas or bloating at this dose, start with 1/4–1/2 capsule per day and increase slowly to 1 capsule a day.)
- Histame from Naturally Vitamins. Histame contains diamine oxidase (DAO).
Suggested supplement bundle:
I’ve created a discounted bundle with the four most important supplements above that I recommend for skin conditions. You may also wish to take the Extra Virgin Cod Liver Oil, Prebiogen, and Histame for optimal results, which you can learn more about and purchase here.
